All do a good job of conveying Roth's sardonic humor, which-even in this younger work-has a world-weary, sorrowful weightiness. The other stories, which include ""The Conversion of the Jews"" and ""You Can't Tell a Man by the Song He Sings,"" are read by Rubinstein, Jerry Zaks, Harlan Ellison, Elliott Gould and Theodore Bikel. Their gentle courtship is disrupted by issues of class, religion and sex. Fascinating, witty, and humane, Fuzz offers hope for compassionate coexistence in our ever-expanding human habitat. When it comes to "problem" wildlife, she finds, humans are more often the problem-and the solution. She taste-tests rat bait, learns how to install a vulture effigy, and gets mugged by a macaque.Ĭombining little-known forensic science and conservation genetics with a motley cast of laser scarecrows, langur impersonators, and trespassing squirrels, Roach reveals as much about humanity as about nature’s lawbreakers. Peter’s Square in the early hours before the pope arrives for Easter Mass, when vandal gulls swoop in to destroy the elaborate floral display. Intrepid as ever, she travels from leopard-terrorized hamlets in the Indian Himalaya to St. Roach tags along with animal-attack forensics investigators, human-elephant conflict specialists, bear managers, and "danger tree" faller blasters. The answers are best found not in jurisprudence but in science: the curious science of human-wildlife conflict, a discipline at the crossroads of human behavior and wildlife biology. What’s to be done about a jaywalking moose? A bear caught breaking and entering? A murderous tree? Three hundred years ago, animals that broke the law would be assigned legal representation and put on trial. The city was an important Atlantic port, serving plantations in the area as a transportation and mercantile hub. Savannah lies about seventeen miles from the river’s mouth on the first firm piece of ground inland from the Atlantic. British defenders under General Augustine Prevost, numbering about one-half of the American-French force, included Highland regulars, Hessian mercenaries, American Loyalists, a few Native Americans, and formerly enslaved African Americans seeking freedom through enlistment. The multinational forces on the revolutionaries’ side included naval and land forces under Count Charles Henri d'Estaing of France, Irishmen of the Dillon Regiment commanded by Colonel Arthur Dillon, a mixed force of cavalry called Pulaski's Legion led by Polish aristocrat Casimir Pulaski, and General Benjamin Lincoln’s force of regulars and militia for a total of about 7,000 men. It was one of the costliest battles of the Revolutionary War in terms of casualties. The Siege of Savannah (September 23 to October 18, 1779) refers to the failed attempt by American and French forces to retake the port city from its British occupiers. Clarke asserts that the Bush White House terminated the counter-terrorism strategy that had been pursued by Clinton until January 2001, was exceedingly slow to put anything else in place, and then after 9/11, led America into a pointless war with Iraq. However, his attack on the current Bush administration is vitriolic and has created the most interest. The political impact of this book is still reverberating and it has caused a furore in the United States.Ĭlarke's survey of bureaucratic bungling takes no prisoners, flattering no president and no institution. Cannily, Clarke released the book at the same time as his testimony to the 9/11 Commission. He offers us a tour d'horizon of the mistakes and missed opportunities of American policy over some twenty years, ending with the recent Bush administration. From 1998 he was ‘Mr Counter-Terrorism’, sitting at the nexus of a host of secretive institutions and operations. Clarke served in the State Department during the Reagan years, then in the National Security Council for more than a decade. Clarke is arguably one of Washington’s most fascinating figures. At the close of the Civil War I found myself without a home, without money and without work. I can only tell of the ten years my dead body lay undiscovered in an Arizona cave. I have never told this story. I know the human mind will not believe what it cannot understand. I who have died two times and am still alive. Someday I will die the real death from which there is no escape. Yet, I feel that I cannot go on living forever. So far as I can remember, I have always been a man of about thirty. I cannot tell because I have never aged as other men do. It is possible I am a hundred, maybe more. Shep O'Neal begins the story of "A Princess of Mars."
